Innovation Fund

The main objective of the Innovation Fund is to finance commercial projects that are relevant to decarbonising Europe and building its climate neutrality. With a total budget of EUR 38 billion, the Innovation Fund is among the EU’s largest funding programmes for innovative low-carbon technology demonstrators. The funding is provided for flagship projects in energy storage, renewable energy production, carbon capture and utilisation (CCU), carbon capture and storage (CCS), and innovative low-carbon technologies for sectors listed in Annex I of the EU ETS Directive.

Innovation Fund | Programme assumptions

The programme is addressed to private and public entities or their consortia interested in implementing innovative technologies at a high level of technological readiness (demonstration stage), contributing to significant environmental effects in the form of reducing GHG emissions.

Two call types are available, depending on project size:

small-scale: for projects with eligible costs up to EUR 7.5m;
large-scale: for projects with eligible costs over EUR 7.5m.

Funding is provided in the form of a non-refundable grant. Funding level for small-scale projects is 60% of the capital expenditure, and for large-scale projects 60% of relevant costs.

Funding applications are submitted directly at the European Commission level, and the agency responsible for the programme is the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
